Lokotstav Canacona 2023
Over the years, the festival has evolved into a vibrant platform for local and regional talent to showcase their traditional skills, helping to preserve the cultural legacy of Goa.
Lokotsav in Canacona was a grand showcase of the region's rich cultural diversity and heritage. This annual festival, which celebrates the folk traditions, crafts and arts of Goa and neighbouring States, brought together artisans, performers and cultural enthusiasts — creating an environment brimming with creativity and authenticity.
The festival hosted a variety of performances ranging from Goan folk dances like "Dhalo" and "Fugdi" to performances by troupes from across India.
One of the highlights of Lokotsav was the craft bazaar, where artisans from different regions exhibited their handmade products. The exhibition featured stalls displaying traditional Goan pottery, bamboo crafts, wood carvings and more. Local artisans from Canacona and beyond found a platform to sell their handcrafted items, supporting their livelihoods and ensuring that their traditional techniques are passed down through generations.
In line with the Swayampurna Goa initiative's mission to foster self-reliance, Lokotsav 2023 empowered rural entrepreneurs by providing opportunities for skill enhancement, market access and greater visibility. The festival encouraged the use of eco-friendly products, promoting sustainable craft traditions that align with the State's vision for environmental conservation.
A key aspect of Lokotsav was the recognition given to individuals who had made exceptional contributions to Goa's cultural and social landscape. These awards celebrated those who had gone above and beyond to preserve, promote and enrich Goan heritage — through traditional arts, crafts, music or social work.
Lokotsav also offered an opportunity to indulge in the region's culinary delights — from Goan fish curry and rice to the much-loved bebinca and sannas. Local chefs and home-based entrepreneurs showcased their culinary expertise, offering festival-goers a taste of authentic Goan flavours.
More than just a cultural festival, Lokotsav was a celebration of heritage, community and sustainability. By offering a platform for artisans, performers and local entrepreneurs, the festival helped preserve Goa's rich traditions while simultaneously supporting its vision for self-reliance under the Swayampurna Goa initiative.
